It’s a toss up. Martin Luther King Jr. or Nelson Mandela? I’m not sure which man was the greatest public moral voice in my lifetime, but at this point it doesn’t matter. I give thanks today for the life of Nelson Mandela. He inspired me. (Personal) He changed the world. (Public) He provided an example of courage and heart and forgiveness. He also captured one of my favorite sayings, “I’m not a saint. I’m just a sinner that keeps on trying.” His body is gone. And so is that infectious smile. But his spirit will remain with us forever. Strangely enough, I’m not sad nor do I grieve. I celebrate the great convergence of divine spirit and human spirit; the power of one person to make a difference in this world.
